A total of 190 Hong Kong university students are each awarded scholarship of $20,000 under Link Asset Management Limited (Link)’s Link University Scholarship (Scholarship).
As Link’s signature youth empowerment programme, the Scholarship awards students who are the first among three generations of their families to attend Hong Kong universities. Link introduced this non-means-tested scholarship in 2015 and has since donated $18.8 million in 940 scholarships.
Nicholas Allen, Chairman of the Board of Link, said, “We saw the enthusiasm and passion of the students on our Interview Day even though it went virtual for safety and convenience. Link hopes to enrich the university life of outstanding, eligible students by improving their learning opportunities to provide them with a comprehensive development foundation.”
Out of the 190 awardees, four scholars receive the awards for the fourth year and three students are ethnic minorities. The Scholarship is open to students from year one to year four. Nearly 1,300 applications were received this year from local universities. Applicants were shortlisted by the Hong Kong Council of Social Service (HKCSS) according to their academic results and social services track record. Around 400 applicants were invited to attend a group interview in October.
For safety reasons regarding the COVID-19 pandemic, the interview was conducted in hybrid format for the first time with students online with panel of judges coming to Link’s headquarters in person. They were assessed based on three criteria: communications skills, logical reasoning and presentation, and social services participation. The panel of judges comprised 48 members from the public and private sectors.
Link created a scholarship webpage to provide students with the Scholarship’s background information and resources prior to the interview day.
Link University Scholarship is part of the Link Together Initiatives, the flagship charity and community engagement programme of Link. Since its inception in 2013, the programme has committed $89 million to support projects with about 10 million beneficiaries in the community.
